Our family is building a house in Piriápolis and I am in 11th grade. At the same time, I wanted a small project of my own instead of only watching videos and waiting. Quail seemed practical: the eggs are useful, the birds need less space than chickens and the starting cost looked manageable.
The goal is simple: eggs for our family first, and if production becomes stable, the extra eggs can go to neighbours and people we know nearby. This is not a farm empire or a claim that I am the best farmer in Uruguay. It is a real case: what worked, what it cost and where I made mistakes.
I did not buy a finished cage. I bought the mesh separately and assembled the rest from material already in our yard: OSB and wooden timber. It is not a showroom-perfect cage, but it fits the space and the task and avoided the cost of a ready-made frame.
We first went to the market in Maldonado, but there were no quail that day. The birds appear there only occasionally, so finding them in person depends on being there at the right time.
I eventually ordered them through Mercado Libre. We waited almost two weeks while the seller raised the birds before sending them. They arrived as young birds, not newly hatched chicks, so I could start with normal daily care.
These are rounded dollar figures from my case. Most cage materials were already in our yard, so only the mesh contributed meaningfully to that part of the cost.
The birds are at home and I am learning how to raise and care for them properly: feed, water, cleaning and light without causing unnecessary stress. Books and videos are one thing; live quail in a yard in Piriápolis are another.
I am waiting for them to begin laying. By the time you read this, the situation may already have changed, so current egg availability is better checked through Telegram. This site is not updated every week.
Price, availability and collection day are confirmed in conversation because they depend on the birds and on my school and construction schedule.
